In the context of the European Council meeting on 19 March, the leaders of the Patriots member parties hereby express their shared convictions regarding the most pressing challenges facing Europe in the current international situation.
Patriots’ leaders express concern over the energy crisis in Europe. The situation in the Middle East endangers the security of supply and further increases energy prices, putting the energy security of Europe at serious risk. This is exacerbated by the halt of oil flows to landlocked countries such as Hungary and Slovakia. The leaders of the Patriots member parties expect the European Commission to support Member States in taking the necessary steps to ensure security of supply for all Member States. They reject all political, legal and infrastructural attempts to endanger the energy security of Member States, and urge the European Commission to, first and foremost, defend the interests of EU Member States.
Patriots’ leaders express their support for a stable and secure Iran where the Iranian people can live their lives free. They warn, however, that the situation in the Middle East could trigger a new migration and security crisis for which Europe is not adequately prepared. They stress that the EU’s current migration framework is inadequate to prevent new mass migration flows and call for stronger protection of the Union’s external borders and intensifying the protection of the national borders of the Member States. Leaders also raise concerns about rising internal security threats, including terrorism, and urge the European Commission and relevant authorities to ensure the safety of European citizens.
The leaders of the Patriots member parties underline that Europe’s competitiveness cannot be restored without significantly lowering energy prices and simplifying regulations. They call on the Commission to present concrete measures to reduce energy costs, strengthen energy security, and ease the bureaucratic burden on businesses. Patriots’ leaders reiterate their opposition to the excessive, ideology-driven green transition and the Green Deal. They also urge the European Commission to abandon plans to recruit 2,500 additional civil servants, which would further increase bureaucracy and administrative spending.
Regarding Ukraine’s accession to the EU, Patriots leaders reiterate their opposition to Ukraine’s accession to the EU which would pose major concerns, especially with regard to the agriculture, labour market, and the security of the Member States. They oppose the idea of “reverse enlargement”. Any fast-track accession, especially of countries not meeting the necessary conditions, would be yet another violation of the treaties.
Patriots’ leaders reaffirm their rejection of the idea of joint borrowing and common debt, which violates the sovereignty of Member States and burdens future generations.
Leaders reiterate their commitment to unanimity decision-making as enshrined in the Treaties, and demand that the Treaties are fully respected. They firmly oppose the EU institutions’ attempts to assume powers that belong to the Member States. Patriots stand for national sovereignty, freedom and cooperation among free nations serving the interests of our peoples, not an unaccountable Brussels bureaucracy.
Finally, Patriots express full solidity with the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán and condemn all threats by Ukrainian officials against him and his family. Intimidation and threats of violence are incompatible with European values and have no place in political discourse.
